Tuesday Library Assignment

The U.S. has lost over 2,800,000 workers to China over the past 15 years, despite the fact that the American workers are far more productive.  This can mostly be explained by the average hourly wage for Chinese manufacturing work being less than a tenth than that of the U.S. hourly wage, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.  The cost of living being twice as low in China drives the labor prices even lower.  Also, Chinese factory workers tend to work longer hours, making them appeal more to manufacturers.  U.S. workers only have only one sole advantage over Chinese workers: they're very productive. The reason they're more productive is because of the working conditions that they have to deal with and the way they're treated.  The better conditions and higher hourly wages only motivates the workers to become more productive.  SC Johnson is an example of a company that operates globally and does it successfully and humanely.  I chose this company because they make thousands of charitable contributions every year.  I found the info on SC Johnson on http://www.scjohnson.com/en/commitment/socialresponsibility/philanthropy.aspx .
